Lovington, NM -

A Hobbs man has been charged with the murder of another man who had been dating his ex-girlfriend.

On Aug. 13, Lovington police responded to a victim with a gunshot wound near North 11th Street and West Gore Ave. Police discovered David Lee Casillas, 29, wounded. He later died at Nor-Lea Hospital.

Investigators say Matthew Red Fuentez, 33, of Hobbs, was the estranged boyfriend of a woman whom the victim had been dating. In the days leading up to the murder, police say Fuentez had been making threats towards Casillas and girlfriend.

On the night of the incident, Fuentez traveled to Lovington where investigators say he waited for Casillas and, after a brief confrontation, shot him. According to police, five children were present during the time of the shooting.

Fuentez was arrested in Hobbs on Aug. 26 and charged with murder. If convicted, he faces life in prison without parole.
