Gerlich to spend time 'getting to know' Lady Raider players

LUBBOCK, Texas -

"This is the greatest day of my professional career," Gerlich said. "I finally get to sit in front of the Texas Tech administration and talk to them about my dream for this program."

She spent the last 14 years as a head coach. The first seven of them were at West Texas A&M. The last seven were at UT Arlington. Athletics Director Kirby Hocutt says it was an extensive search, and her coaching resume provided clarity. It didn't hurt that she was a valuable part of the 1993 National Title Lady Raider team.

"There is nobody better at this moment in time to lead this women's basketball program, than Krista Gerlich," Hocutt said.

Change in the culture won't happen overnight. During her tenure, players claimed former head coach Marlene Stollings created a 'toxic environment'. Now, Hocutt has tasked Gerlich with rebuilding trust. She says she has reach out to all the players and commended them for the difficult situation.

The next couple of days we're going to spend some one-on-one time getting to know each other. One of the questions I want to ask them is why they chose Texas Tech. I just want to go through those items and find out where the gap is. We want to mend those gaps," Gerlich said.

None of the current players ruled out staying and they are giving her a fair shot.

"We want them to be here. Our teammates want them to be here. We're gonna have great conversations and see where that leads," Gerlich said.

Gerlich was an assistant for Marsha Sharp for four years and believes her path is similar to the path of Chris Beard since he was an assistant for Bob Knight.

"I am really looking forward to learning from him and just watching his program. He has done it the right way and did it very quickly. That's what we want to do on the women's side as well," Gerlich said.

"There are so many out there that not only love this university but love their Lady Raiders. Just how many again will fill that arena? We will get there."

Gerlich is bringing most of UT Arlington staff with her.
