As animal clinics see spike in visits veterinarians are feeling the effects

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Veterinarians are busier than ever right now while people are working from home and spending more time with their pets.

"We have a lot more wellness catching up on vaccinations, catching up on heartworm tests, heartworm and parasite prevention -- things like that," Managing Veterinarian for Acres North Lindsay Mathre said.

The demand has patients waiting even longer. Dr. Mathre says pre-pandemic her clinic was typically booking appointments a week in advance. Now, it's booking anywhere from two to six weeks out depending on the need.

"People are spending a lot more time with the pets that they have. If they don't have a pet there have been an increase in adoptions," she said.

With COVID-19 precautions in place, Acres North has completely transitioned to curbside service. It's to keep clients safe through contact-less visits. But for pets, Dr. Mathre says it ensures they're not without that face-to-face interaction.

"The best way for us to address people's need for their pets is that physical examination, that hands-on part," she said.

With the increase in visits, animal technicians are starting to feel the effects.

"We have one hand that's very good at the multi-tasking part," Dr. Mathre said, "and then when we get to slow down that's when things like compassion fatigue."

While she believes the profession is a resilient one, she says leaning on her co-workers is a big part in handling the day-to-day stress.

"It's very important for every veterinarian to make sure that they have a well trained team that they trust," she said.

During contact-less appointments, the technician calls the client from the exam room to discuss any necessary procedures the animal might need.
