LUBBOCK, Texas -

There is nothing quite like the feeling of getting a letter in the mail.

Terri Rickman, Director of of memory care at Raider Ranch says even with the technology we have today, the value of one is unmatched, especially for her residents.

"A physical connection, so they can hold the letter, touch the letter, see the letter versus the virtual reality," she said.

Rickman posted on Facebook about a new pen pal program, looking to create new bonds for residents who have been mostly cut off from the outside world.

"The last couple months have been hard for them, and everyone else. You know, families were coming in and spending time and playing games and with the COVID-19 going on...it's all been shut down," Rickman explained.

Now, there is a stack of more than 200 letters, just waiting to be opened.

"Really made my heart happy to see," CNA Savannah Clark said.

Her part of the project, involved talking with the residents about what they loved most.

"They were super excited for someone to actually be interested in them, and what they liked and what they did," she said.

The response they got, was more than they ever could have expected. Not only did they get letters from Lubbock and the surrounding area but from more than a half a dozen stated.

"Cities as far as Washington, Missouri, so they're coming from everywhere. It's very exciting," Rickman said.

Other return addresses include Turner, Oregon, Des Moines, Iowa and Hershey, Pennsylvania.

The project has not just made new connections for the residents, it has also brought them closer to ones they already have.

"Working with these residents day in and day out, they're obviously like family, but I got to learn a lot where they traveled, reading, what they were good at," Clark said.

Soon, they will be sharing those stories with their 200 plus new friends.
