AUSTIN, Texas -

Emphasizing more "local control", Governor Abbott says he's leaving decisions on fall collegiate sports up to the conferences and schools.

He said he hasn't spoken to athletic directors in about a month, and says it's up to each program to ensure its students' safety.

"I support the student-athletes and their decisions but I think that the health and safety and the careers of the student-athletes come first," he said. "If they choose to continue to play this season, make sure that the universities are working with them on protocols to ensure their health and safety during the course of a season."

Back in June, the governor approved guidelines for outdoor stadiums. The state will allow them to reopen at up to half capacity. Under that guidance, the Jones could hold up to 50,000 people.
