LUBBOCK, Texas -

A barbecue eatery helped raise money to get a Lubbock man back to doing what he loves.

Porky's Smoking Grill held a fundraiser for Hymie Perez Saturday. Friends say Perez was attacked and his service dog was stolen at Mae Simmons Park while fishing on July 30. He was hospitalized with critical injuries.

Owner of Porky's Chris Hernandez says he's known Perez since they were in school and wanted to help him out.

"I've seen what he went through, and I wanted to reach out to him and help him out in these hard times. But this is what I do every weekend. I come out here at the H&R Block on University and sell barbecue, so I just made extra food so that way I could help a family in need," he said.

50% of the proceeds will go to Perez's family. A GoFundMe has also been set up to raise funds - click here to contribute.
