City Council could invest in outdoor tornado sirens

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

The City of Lubbock is prepared to invest in outdoor tornado sirens.

The city calls it an 'early warning system' in its proposed budget. This project's been in the works since 2014.

After six years, it's about a third of the original price. Now the city's planning on investing less than $1 million to place 39 sirens throughout the city over the next year.

The sirens would sound on cues from the National Weather Service or from trained, city-contracted storm spotters. The sirens would only be place on city right-of-ways, so it wouldn't have to acquire an other land for them.

If council approves this budget, the city also plans to invest more into it next year, for full-time maintenance employees, spare parts and storage.
