Broadway Festivals announces plans for a televised concert to air Aug. 30

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Instead of a parade, vendors or contests, the 30th celebration of 4th on Broadway will be a televised concert this year.

The highly-anticipated event, was initially postponed to Labor Day weekend.

"With the uptick in COVID, we feel like there's just no way to get people out by that soon," president of Broadway Festivals Don Caldwell said. "This event is near and dear to lots of people's hearts. To keep it going is so important and to be able to do this thing is a new slant, it's gonna be a lot and I think people are going to really be impressed with it," he added.

The biggest threat to the largest free festival in the state in the past was usually rain. Even after a near-washout in 2010, this is the first time in the festival's history that there will be no live events.

Local T.V. stations are making sure it will still be accessible to everyone this year.

"We were involved with it 30 years ago when it got started," president of Ramar Communications and FOX34 Brad Moran said. "Our job is to support community events, and this is the quintessential community event. That's why we've always supported it, and we want to continue doing that," he said.

Production for the 3 hour special is already underway and will feature 36 acts from local to legendary talent, including Josh Adams and Mac Davis.

The  concert will air the afternoon of August 30 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on FOX34 and MyLubbockTV along with other local stations. It will also stream online.

"We do look forward to July 4, 2021. I've got that one circled in red, white and blue. We'll celebrate our 31st 4th on Broadway, that day. But this year, we're going to make the very best of it," Mayor Dan Pope said.
