Texas Tech athletes, coaches call for change in 'Red Raiders United Walk'

Posted: Updated:

It was a show of solidarity on the Texas Tech campus Sunday night. Student athletes and coaches participated in the "Red Raiders United Walk," intending to bring attention to social justice issues and racial disparities in the country.

The event organized by students had members of the football, basketball and soccer teams along with their coaches and staff participating. Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovanec said it sends a message that the university values these players and their experiences.

"It's a statement about how these athletes support one another and also a statement about how we support them," Schovanec said.

Head football Coach Matt Wells wanted to show he supports the men he leads.

"I'm gonna stand with every one of these guys and every one of you out there against racial injustice," Wells said, "and understand that we can all do a better job of listening, learning and being educated."

The walk from Jones Stadium to Memorial Circle required marchers to wear masks for their safety.

Classes start for Texas Tech August 24.
