Some citizens in Levelland are unhappy that their mayor is still in office.
"I'm real passionate about this because it's not a black or white thing;" says Janice Holland, "it's a right and wrong thing. And she was totally wrong."
MAYOR BARBRA PINNER IS UNDER SCRUTINY FOR SHARING A POST MORE THAN A MONTH AGO THAT CONTAINED THE 'N-WORD' TO HER PERSONAL SOCIAL MEDIA PAGE. SHE DELETED THE POST AND APOLOGIZED PUBLICALLY BUT SOME INDIVIDUALS ARE NOT SATISFIED.
"We just feel like that wasn't enough." says Manuel Mendez, We feel like that... perhaps maybe she should have resigned. And that's what we're asking her to do."
COMMUNITY MEMBERS DRAFTED A PETITION CALLING FOR PINNER TO STEP DOWN. THEY NEED 735 SIGNATURES TO FORCE A RECALL AND ARE URGING PEOPLE TO SHOW THEIR SUPPORT.
"I think we are close to the number that we're needing but I'd like to have more than what we need." Mendez said.
JANICE HOLLAND... A FORMER RESIDENT... SAYS SOME INDIVIDUALS ARE AFRAID TO SIGN BECAUSE OF HOW THEIR LIVELIHOOD MIGHT BE AFFECTED. BUT SHE ENCOURAGES CITIZENS TO LOOK PAST ANY THREATS.
"Just come sign the petition you have rights." Holland says, "If they try to get your job, if they try to blackball your business, you can file a lawsuit. You know it's not right; it's just not right."
A FORMER CITY COUNCILMAN EXPLAINS WHY HE THINKS PINNER SHOULD BE REMOVED.
"We're not going to sit by and let racism continue to run in our community; and people don't believe that it exists, but yes it does." Mendez says, "It runs deep here in this community. I was raised here and I want people to not be afraid. I'm standing up."
Mendez continued saying, "You know some people have told me 'this doesn't concern me' sure it does. It concerns me and I'm out lookin for the future of our children, my children, and the people's children. That's what we should be doin. Don't be afraid, come out. Come out, please and sign this petition. Let's get us a mayor that cares about all people."
CITIZENS HAVE UNTIL AUGUST 3RD TO SIGN THE PETITION.
