Lea County Sheriff's investigators arrest one and search for one in Perales homicide

On July 14, 2020, at approximately 10:30 AM, Lea County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the area of Cody Lane and East Dakota Road, Lovington, New Mexico in reference to reported deceased male subject. Lea County Sheriff’s Investigators responded to the scene and located a male subject, later identified as Davan Perales, 21 of Hobbs, New Mexico. It was later discovered, Perales had six gunshots to the upper region of his body.

Through investigative efforts, LCSO Investigators located a residence in the 600 block of North Houston, Hobbs, New Mexico, to be the residence Perales had been before the area of Cody Lane and East Dakota Road. The residents confirmed Perales had been there on July 13, 2020 and left with three other people. They also provided investigators with vehicle information and Perales’ clothing description.

Utilizing video footage, Deputies and Investigators located the vehicle involved in this case in the backyard of a residence in the 1200 block of North Gulf, Hobbs, New Mexico. They observed Eric Jaramillo, 29 of Hobbs, New Mexico cleaning the backseat of the vehicle. Investigators seized the vehicle and located what appeared to be blood on various areas of the vehicle.

During an investigative interview with a witness, information was provided regarding the locations of possible evidence. Investigators and Deputies located a .380 caliber pistol and its magazine, a 9MM caliber pistol and its magazine, a live 9mm caliber ammunition round, and a GPS tracker charger. During the interview, a second suspect, Steven Gresham, 32 of Hobbs, New Mexico, was identified. The witness admitted to investigators to be the driver of the vehicle during the shooting of Perales. The witness identified Jaramillo as the shooter and stated they observed Gresham assist Jaramillo remove Perales’ lifeless body from the backseat of the vehicle and onto the ground in the area of Cody Lane and East Dakota Road. After Jaramillo had shot Perales, Jaramillo held the gun to the witness’ head and threatened their life and family’s lives. The witness continued to drive Gresham and Jaramillo to a residence in Tatum, New Mexico, where Jaramillo washed his hands.

Jaramillo was arrested on July 17, 2020, on a Hobbs Municipal Bench Warrant for failure to appear. While incarcerated on the Municipal Bench Warrant, an arrest warrant was obtained and served on Jaramillo. He was charged with an Open County of 1st degree Murder, 3 Counts of Tampering with Evidence (3rd degree felony), Bribery or Intimidation of a Witness; Retaliation Against a Witness (3rd degree felony), Aggravated Assault Against a Household Member (4th degree felony), and Firearms or Destructive Device; Receipt, Transportation or Possession by a Felon (4th degree felony). He is currently incarcerated in the Lea County Detention Center on a No Bond Pretrial Detention Order.

Lea County Sheriff’s Investigators have issued an arrest warrant for Steven Gresham. He is charged with Accessory to Wit; Murder (1st degree felony) and Tampering with Evidence (3rd degree felony).
