LUBBOCK, Texas -

About 10,000 people in Texas are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant, according to LifeGift.

The nonprofit reports about 22 people across the U.S. die everyday because there are not enough organs available.

Nearly four years ago, when 2-year-old Madilyn McGowan died after suffering a fever seizure, her family made the decision to donate her organs.

Brittany McGowan, her mother, said they did so in hopes that it would save someone else.

"I just wanted our daughter to continue to live on, maybe not in the same town or the same house, but out there having new adventures and helping somebody else in life," Brittany said. "She was very selfless. She helped her brother, she helped her sister, she helped her grandmother. She loved to help everyone, loved everyone, she's always big sister."

Madilyn's donation helped doctors save the life of another six-month-old child and a grandmother from Houston.

To honor her daughter's memory, Brittany participates in the 2nd Chance Run, hosted by LifeGift, every year to highlight the importance of organ donation and encourage others to consider registering.

The run will be held virtually this year due to the pandemic on Saturday, Aug. 1. To sign up for the Lubbock 2nd Chance Run, click here.
