Texas Tech students help educate Lubbock community on Buckner Family Pathways

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

Buckner Family Pathways specializes in assisting single-parent families. Today, Texas Tech students led an in-depth virtual presentation on the resources the non-profit provides.

"Our whole motivation and theme was, you're on your own but you're not alone," Aleisha Gutierrez, Addiction and Recovery Studies major, said.

The program offers resources, to encourage self-sufficiency. Resources include:

  • Affordable housing
  • Child care
  • Parenting skills
  • Counseling
  • Family coaching
  • Money management training
  • Mentorship
  • Conflict resolution tools

Program Director Mandy Terry says services also help families during their transition on their journey to become even more independent.

"That's the whole heart of Buckner Family Pathways is to support those families so that they can provide a stable and safe home for their kids so that their kids can thrive as well," she said.

Gutierrez believes advocating for programs like these is important to help end the stigma surrounding single-families.

"You know these are kind of the cards you're dealt, these are your circumstances but this is where we can take ownership. We can change the course of direction for our future, you know, as an individual and then the future of our children who are brought up in this," she said. "And to really break that cycle of dependency and to create self-sufficiency and education and empowering them."

She encourages others to step-up and be a voice so families in our area know they're not alone.

"Our whole motivation and theme was, you're on your own but you're not alone," she said. "Just because you're not advocacy, or you're not a mental health professional or you're not a survivor advocate, or somebody that's on the frontline of those things -- that doesn't mean you can't be involved."

Buckner also has a foster care and adoption program. More information on resources and ways to get involved can be found - here
