Lubbock man charged with aggravated assault following shooting involving officers

LUBBOCK, Texas -

A Lubbock man is charged after pointing a gun at a Texas Highway Patrol Trooper and Knox County Sheriff Thursday morning.

DPS officials say the trooper and Knox County sheriff responded to reports of someone shooting at vehicles on the roadway near US 82. After receiving the suspect vehicle description, they stopped a truck/tractor semi-trailer about eight miles west of Benjamin.

The suspect vehicle was stolen and occupied by driver Chase Rountree, 33, of Lubbock, and passenger Mychele Mendez, 30, of Lubbock, according to DPS.

Investigators report while the vehicle was stopped, Rountree exited with a firearm, refused commands of law enforcement and pointed the weapon at the officers. That's when investigators say he was shot by both the trooper and Knox County sheriff. Rountree was airlifted to UMC with serious injuries. The officers were not injured.

Mendez was not hurt and was taken to the Knox County Jail.

Rountree will face aggravated assault charges on a peace officer. Mendez will face charges regarding vehicle theft.
