"It's not just our loss, the state has lost a wonderful sheriff," friend Veronica Hardt said.

Family, friends and co-workers gathered along route 380 as the procession for fallen Lynn County Sheriff drove in from Post.

Sharing hugs, flashing their lights and saluting their fallen sheriff as the flags at his agency flew at half-staff.

Vega was elected as sheriff in 2016, and was poised to begin another term. But then he got sick with COVID-19.

He was hospitalized for 2 weeks in Lubbock, spending 9 days on a ventilator, before he was airlifted to a Dallas hospital on July 7.

He died on Saturday at just 48 years old.

Vega is remembered by the people who loved him as a fun person, a "good hugger" and a dedicated public servant.

"He had a friendly smile. He went out of his way to help people, he was a very special person and he will be missed," Hardt said.

This the first reported COVID-19 related death of a South Plains elected official.

Sheriff Vega is not the first in the county to succumb to the novel virus. The fear is, he will not be the last.

"This disease has hit us hard and it is serious. People need to stop like it's a joke, it's not a joke. It's not like the common flu," Hardt said. "There's a lot here that have recovered from it, but 3 did not," she said.

The funeral for Sheriff Vega will be this Friday at the Tahoka football stadium at 10 a.m.

On Thursday, there will be a public viewing at First Baptist Church at 1701 Ave. K from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Instead of flowers,  the family is asking for donations to be made to the scholarships in Vega's name, to continue his legacy.
