LUBBOCK, Texas -

Lubbock ISD welcomed students back to the classroom this week. Summer school classes started Monday for the district.

It's the first time students have had in-person instruction since March when schools were closed due to COVID-19.

Misty Rieber, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, says holding summer school classes is preparing students and teachers for changes that will be made in the upcoming school year.

"We've been able to see what it feels like. School is going to look different next year, but students are still going to learn. They're still going to be safe. They're still going to be healthy, and summer school has given us a chance for our own apprehension to say wow we can do this and we can be really successful at this and it's made us more confident in our practice and the way we do things differently," she said.

Lubbock ISD has more than 1,500 students taking part in summer school classes across more than 40 campuses.
