Lubbock man arrested, charged with endangering a child after standoff

LUBBOCK, Texas -

A Lubbock man was arrested following a standoff with police near 52nd and University late Wednesday morning. 

Charles Gray, 51, is charged with endangering a child. 

Officers responded to the area following reports that Gray was causing issues and possibly armed. Police discovered Gray in the front yard of the listed residence holding a rifle. 

Police report Gray did not comply with their commands and walked to the backyard with the rifle. Police determined he went into the residence through the back door where others were inside. Occupants inside were contacted by phone and exited the home.

Police say Gray remained inside with a juvenile, but come out into the backyard where he spoke with officers in the alley. Officers were able to arrest Gray away from the back door while he was distracted. 

Police located the rifle behind a doghouse where Gray tried to conceal it. 

He was taken to the Lubbock County Detention Center and charged with evading, endangering a child and tampering with evidence.
