LUBBOCK, Texas -

A detective in our area is receiving the 2020 Cherish the Children Award.

The South Plains Coalition for Child Abuse Prevention, Lubbock Area United Way and the Chamber of Commerce presented Kyle Purdue with the award at Citizens Tower Tuesday.

Purdue was chosen to receive the award after giving away a car seat he had in his patrol vehicle to someone he pulled over. Now, the Lubbock Police Department has started a program to provide car seats to families that need them.

"Child safety is my number one thing. After spending seven and a half years working fatal accident for the city i realized how crucial it is to have proper restraints in order to save children's lives," Purdue said. "This award is awesome, but it's not the award that matters to me it's the children that hopefully we're going to save with this program."

The award is part of the Go Blue Lubbock Campaign. It's given out every year to an entity or individual from the community who is recognized as an advocate for child abuse prevention.
