Horses and burros up for adoption Saturday at South Plains Fair Grounds

LUBBOCK, Texas -

You can give a wild horse or burro a much needed good home Saturday.

The Bureau of Land Management is hoping to get 100 adopted and is offering incentives. There are adult and yearling horses and burros for show, all untrained.

The agency emphasizes our area is an ideal space for these animals.

"The herd management areas are overcrowded out west and there's just not enough forage and water to support the animals. So we gather off a certain number each year and offer em up to the public for adoption. We're also overcrowded in our BLM corrals so the federal government is offering a 1000 dollar incentive if folks will come and adopt today. You'll receive the first 500 in about three months and the next 500 about a year from now," wild horse and burro specialist Crystal Cowan said.

You must be 18 or older, with at least 400 square feet of corral space per horse.

They'll be at the South Plains Fair Grounds from 8 a.m. until noon.
