Texas Republican Party files suit against City of Houston after GOP convention cancelled

Posted: Updated:
HOUSTON, TX -

The Texas Republican Party has followed through on its threat to sue the City of Houston.

The party's chairman says the city's decision to cancel the GOP's in-person convention was purely political.

Mayor Sylvester Turner ordered the downtown convention center to use its "act of God" contract clause to block next week's event. The party claims that's a breach of its contract with the City of Houston.

Chairman James Dickeys says the Democratic mayor is trying to disenfranchise Republican voters, not protect them. Dickey points to large protests in Houston, saying Mayor Turner treats them differently than Republicans planning to attend the convention.

Dickey says Mayor Turner changed the city's guidelines to impose more restrictions on the convention than it did for other organizations.

The party is asking for a court to enforce the contract and block the city from trying to restrict or cancel it again.
