Thursday: Lubbock at 2,620 COVID-19 cases; 1,424 active; 1,144 recoveries and 52 deaths

LUBBOCK, Texas -

The Lubbock health department reported 163 new cases of COVID-19 Thursday, bringing the total number of cases to 2,620.

The health department also reported 68 additional recoveries. 1,144 people have tested positive and now recovered.

Governor Abbott issued a statewide face covering requirement in Texas counties with more than 20 positive cases. Along with the mask mandate, the governor also issued a proclamation giving mayors and county judges the ability to impose restrictions on some outdoor gatherings of over 10 people. There are now 1,424 active cases. No new hospitalizations were reported; 59 people are in the hospital for treatment. 52 people have died from the virus, according to the health department. Only two deaths have been reported in the last couple months. Two people in their 50s have died; all other deaths are people who were 60 or older.

There were 1,029 new tests administered in Lubbock County, for a total of 41,414 since mid-March. Out of those, 3,105 have confirmed positive, including people traveling from other counties for testing. This is a positive rate of 7.49 percent.

There are 64 people hospitalized for COVID-19 treatment in Lubbock, with 31 patients in specialized intensive care unites and 33 others considered "floor patients." The city reports there remains ample hospital capacity , with nearly 500 open beds for treatment.
