Citibus on-demand service taking off

The new "microtransit" program with Citibus that launched last month is taking off in the city.

"When COVID hit back in march, our fixed-route ridership took a pretty hard hit, which was about a 40% reduction," General Manager Chris Mandrell said.

Today, however, ridership has bounced back by 22%. Mandrell says the company wanted to fill the gaps in service during the pandemic.

"It's changing the way everyone...runs their business," Mandrell said.

On-demand ridership is growing about 30% each week, since the program was launched in late May. According to rider feedback, the convenience of the service is enjoyed the most.

"It allows the rider to kind of control their trips and they can book that trip when they're ready to go," Mandrell explained.

In order to use the service all you have to do is download the "Citibus On-Demand" app to get started. It's available on both the App Store and Google Play.

"The average rating we've gotten so far is 4.87 out of 5. So it's been very positive," Mandrell said.

The pilot program is scheduled to continue for at least 5 months, but there's a good chance this service could be sticking around.

"The community has embraced it. I think it's definitely something we can continue to provide, we just got to find a way to do it and find the right fit when we get on the backside of a lot of this pandemic," Mandrell said.

As the pandemic has continued, the buses undergo daily and weekly cleanings to keep the spread of the virus low.

Employees are required to wear masks, and riders are highly encouraged to do so as well.
