Mooney considering second year of basketball camp in Lubbock

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Former Red Raider and current Cleveland Cavalier Matt Mooney is hoping to have year two of his basketball camp in a few weeks, but wants it to be done safely.

He took to Twitter to see if parents and kids would be comfortable attending amid the pandemic. Of the 1,244 votes, 73% said they would be.

Prakash Shrestha, an infectious disease physician with Covenant, says the event is possible if the proper precautions are taken.

"One thing that could be done would be staggering the arrivals so there's not much crowd at that point when the players arrive," Shrestha said.

The protocols don't end there. Temperature checks will be more crucial with the lack of available testing in Lubbock. Shrestha says an indoor camp can work but outdoors would be more ideal. He suggested limiting the amount of people there, having only players from the area attending and recommended doing more personal drills to avoid groups along with extensive cleaning.

"The highly touched areas in the field or arena need to be cleaned very intensely," Shrestha said.

"We will sanitize the basketballs every night," Matt Mooney said. "We'd require hand sanitizer use between drills."

Mooney understands it can be difficult to socially distance during camps.

"If that's going to be a necessity, social distancing, then there is no point in running the camp," Mooney said.

Mooney understands the positive impact it has on the kids.

"It's so important for kids to be active. It stimulates their minds and mental health. It's good for their relationships and they're kids. That's what they are supposed to do," Mooney said.

"We certainly can do it but they'll have to be careful with what they are doing," Shrestha said. "If anyone attending has vulnerable family members at home they need to be especially extra careful."

Mooney has a few weeks to make a decision since he will be reporting back to the Cavaliers around July 16th.
