Plenty of heat next several days with low rain chances mainly west near the TX/NM border tonight and late Saturday. Mostly sunny today with the high near 94 and a light breeze from the south 10-18 mph. These lower and mid 90s continue into Saturday, then we climb nearing 100 Sunday with a breezy southwest wind 15-25 mph.
Texas has reported more than 17,000 new cases of coronavirus in the past three days
So Governor Abbott is putting a temporary halt on reopening the state. Businesses that have been allowed to open under previous phases of the governor's plan will be allowed to stay open while adhering to distancing and capacity rules set by the state health department. The governor asks everyone to wear a mask in public, wash hands regularly and socially distance from others.
The City of Lubbock confirmed 130 new cases of COVID-19 yesterday
It's the third day in a row for more than 100 new cases. There has been one death in the past month. The city also reports 63 more recoveries. 765 people have beaten the virus. There have now been more than 34,000 tests conducted in Lubbock, with more than 700 yesterday. The positive rate has climbed to 6.5% percent. City leaders earlier said a goal was to keep the rate below six percent. 35 people are hospitalized with the illness. 16 are in intensive care.
First Bank and Trust is temporarily closing two branches because of COVID-19 exposures
It is temporarily closing the locations at 22nd and Indiana and at 78th and Indiana. The south Indiana location is expected to reopen on Monday.
Plainview and Hale counties confirmed another 14 cases of the virus along with three more recoveries
There are now 111 active cases. Seven people have died from COVID-19 in Hale County.
Bailey County reported its first death attributed to the coronavirus
473 tests have been administered in the area since testing began. Of those, 95 cases have been confirmed. 52 cases are listed as active. 42 people have recovered.
The White House coronavirus task force is holding a public briefing today
It's the first time the group has spoken to the public in almost two months. The White House has not said if Drs. Anthony Fauci and Deborah Birx will be at today's briefing. It has confirmed Vice President Mike Pence will lead it.
The Government Accountability Office estimates $1.4 billion in stimulus relief money was sent to dead people
Analysts say it was inevitable for mistakes to happen. It was a large government program done very quickly with no precedent and $1.4 billion is a relatively low amount, compared to $2 trillion.The Trump Administration says it is open to the idea of a second round of stimulus payments. That possibility is on the negotiating table in Washington.
