A gathering in Lubbock commemorated its veterans, service members and their families Thursday night. It was a toast to the Monument of Courage in Huneke Park.
Three new granite slabs were installed earlier in the day. The installation took several hours. The evening's event began at 8:48, 12 minutes before 9 o'clock, honoring the 12 Medal of Honor recipients recognized at Thursday's event. Seven of these service members lost their lives in the line of duty.
The monument, near 84th Street and Nashville Avenue, honors families who have lost a relative to combat, soldiers who have received a Medal of Honor and service members who have been wounded.
The official dedication for the Monument of Courage is scheduled for 9:12 a.m. August 7.
