LUBBOCK, Texas -

The Lubbock health department confirmed 130 new COVID-19 cases Thursday, bringing the total number of cases to 1,795. Of those, 979 cases are active.

As Texas is seeing a recent surge in positive COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations, Governor Abbott paused any further phases to open the states economy. Part of the governor's "pause" includes a ban on elective surgeries in Bexar, Dallas, Harris and Travis counties - four areas where the number of patients hospitalized with the virus is quickly progressing.

The health department also reported 63 additional recoveries, with the total number of recoveries at 765. The number of people whose death is attributed to the virus remains at 51.

There have been 34,288 tests administered in Lubbock. Of those, 2,218 have come back positive with 402 tests pending. There were 735 additional tests conducted since yesterday. The positive rate of tests is 6.5 percent.

Two new hospitalizations were reported. 35 people are hospitalized with 19 floor patients and 16 in the ICU.

There remains ample available hospital capacity, with fewer than 500 beds available.

Much more detailed data is available through the city's COVID-19 dashboard
