City Council members express concerns over COVID-19 case spike

Posted: Updated:

City Council members say they are concerned about the spike in COVID-19 cases. They are leaving it up to the state to enforce guidelines, and unlike some other cities, will not put the burden on businesses.

District Two Councilwoman Shelia Patterson Harris said she was concerned about the virus even before the spike.

"As I've watched over the past few weeks as those numbers continue to go up and in the groups of people of color, its concerned me," Harris said.

Citizens must work to protect those around them, she said.

"I think it's important we recognize that we are our brother and sister's keeper, and we've got to do things to make sure that the person next to us is well," Harris said.

District One Councilman Juan Chadis said he is concerned about the recent spike in younger people, and that they may come in contact with those who are vulnerable to the virus.

"The concern is that's a pretty mobile society, the 19 to 25 year olds, and who else do they come in contact with? This could really explode on us, if you will," Chadis said.

He said we need to continue moving forward with reopening, and the responsibility lies with society to mitigate the spread.

"We need to do our part. It doesn't take that big of an effort to wear a mask," he said. "You go to the grocery stores, you go to the hardware stores, and the great majority of the people aren't wearing masks, and that seems to be the concern."

District Five Councilman Steve Massengale is the head of the Lubbock Economic Recovery Task Force. He encouraged businesses that have self-certified as "Lubbock Safe" to not get complacent.

"If some of these businesses have relaxed their strategies, I hope what they see in the data this week reminds them that they need to readhere to some of those policies," Massengale said.
