LUBBOCK, Texas -

The Lubbock Youth Sports Complex is hosting the biggest sporting event since the pandemic began: The Goliath Softball Tournament.

"They're all doing really well social distancing. Players are leaving their games once they are done so the next round can come," Tournament Director Julie Rodriguez said.

88 teams from five different states are competing, with close to 1,000 players participating. Teams are required to clean their dugout after the game ends. After that, the tournament staff goes in to do another clean and then they take care of the bleachers. Rodriguez said the biggest challenges they have faced has been with the bathrooms, but the feedback has been positive.

"I think the parents are truly grateful that their girls are playing in the tournament this weekend. Everyone has been working together and doing their part," Rodriguez said.

Robert Manzanares, a softball coach whose team made the trek to Lubbock from Colorado, says playing the game is good for his players' mental health. They were considering a few bigger cities like Las Vegas and Dallas, but wanted to go somewhere close to home to be able to take extra precautions. He's been pleased with the tournament so far.

"I think they're dong a good job," Manzanares said. "They're taking care of us. They're watching pitchers and watching others. No flower seeds, no spitting and they are watching pitchers to see if they are licking their hands."

The tournament will wrap up Sunday around six o'clock.
