Softball tournament to take place in Lubbock this weekend

LUBBOCK, Texas -

The Goliath fastpitch tournament hosted by USSSA is taking over Lubbock Youth Sports Complex this weekend. Four different age divisions and 88 teams are competing.

USSSA Tournament Director, Julie Rodriguez, said this has been long awaited and teams are eager to get back on the diamond.

"I get numerous Emails daily about when are we going to be able to play," Rodriguez said. "So getting them out there to play has been our goal."

With the recent spike in COVID-19 cases in Lubbock, Rodriguez said there was some concern about the tournament getting canceled.

"We just try to reassure them that we're going to practice the social distancing and do everything possible to keep everybody safe," she said.

Rodriguez is confident that Lubbock Youth Sports Complex is the ideal location to return to play.

"Lubbock is the perfect place to do that because of the way those fields out there are set up.," she said. "The fields are not on top of each other so there's lots and lots of room out there, which is great for this."

USSSA has a long list of safety protocols in place and Lubbock Mayor Dan Pope thinks they covered all bases.

"They've done a very good job in preparing for this weekend," Pope said. "We need to learn from these events because how do we expect to play football this fall if we can't have 1,000 people at a softball tournament."

Of the 88 teams participating, only ten are local. The rest will travel to Lubbock from Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and other parts of Texas. Mayor Pope said this is not particularly a concern as Texas Tech students will eventually return from those places as well.

"If they'll follow the protocols put in place, I think they can play softball safely," he said. "We've got to find a way to coexist with this virus."

USSSA will host another fastpitch tournament in Lubbock in July. The Goliath will serve as a benchmark for club sports moving forward.
