BAILEY COUNTY, Texas -

87 Bailey County inmates were tested for COVID-19 after a jailer tested positive for the virus earlier this month. 36 tests came back positive.

Inmates were tested on Monday. On Friday, June 12, all jail staff were tested, with nine of those tests also positive. The jail staff that tested positive were then quarantined.

Sheriff Willis stopped all visitation with inmates toward the beginning of the spread of COVID-19, so there was no exposure to the public at the jail.

Bailey County reports, as with every positive case, the people who received a positive, and their households, have been quarantined.

Sheriff Richard Wills stopped all visitation to the jail at the beginning of the pandemic. There has been no exposure to the public at the jail. Also, all movement of inmates in and out of the jail has now been ceased.

A statement from the county shows the sheriff, other local officials, the Texas Commission on Jail Standards and Texas Department of State Health Services are working together to determine best way forward.
