Washington D.C. -

Senator John Cornyn's resolution honoring Juneteenth passed the Senate Monday.

The resolution designates June 19 as 'Juneteenth Independence Day'.

Juneteenth is the day in history when news of the end of slavery reached slaves in the southwestern states.

Celebrations have been held on the day for more than 150 years to honor Black American's freedom and encourage self-development and respect for all cultures.

The resolution holds the Senate responsible for recognizing the historical significance of the day and supporting nationwide celebrations.
