Lubbock Cooper Elementary teacher paints rocks for students
LUBBOCK, Texas -
A Lubbock Cooper teacher is going the extra mile to encourage her fifth graders during a time when teaching has been pushed beyond classroom walls.
Deborah Parrish started giving art, hand-painted rocks, out to students who were putting in extra effort in attending meetings with teachers or joining in class activities.
It served as a way to reward and encourage others to get involved. It was all non-contact, she went to each individual home and left them on the doorstep.
"Of all the things, my favorite was being able to go home and email the parents and say hey there's a rock on your front door for your child and they are doing great doing their assignments, turning their assignments in online and they're meeting with their teachers and we're really proud of them. We're really proud of the work that they're doing," Parrish said.
Parrish even tailored rocks to students interests when she could, like a favorite animal or color.
When asked what she looks forward to most about teaching in person again one day, Parrish said the laughter, the busyness of the classroom and just being together.
