Council members discuss 'impact fees' on developers and builders in expanding areas

LUBBOCK, Texas -

In a couple weeks city leaders will determine whether to levy additional fees on development.

During its work session Tuesday, staffers presented data on 'impact fees'. These are additional charges developers and builders would pay to provide infrastructure in expanding areas.

The idea is those fees would make growth pay for growth. Micheal Keenum, Director of Engineering for the City of Lubbock, says in turn, this would make it more expensive to build.

"We want Lubbock to continue to grow. We share the same cause with the builders and developers to keep the costs as low as we can. infrastructure costs money and so were just finding ways to fund that to continue to allow our city to grow," he said.

Developers say by making it more expensive to build, Lubbock would lose its reputation as a low-cost place to live and could potentially push more people out of their homes.

That decision is set for the next regular meeting on June 23.
