The historic Cactus Theater to reopen Saturday

LUBBOCK, Texas -

The historic Cactus Theater sat empty for almost three months, and owner Darryl Holland says he can't wait to open up the doors Saturday night.

"The shutdown has been challenging for all of us," Holland said. "It's cut back a little bit on some of the improvements we wanted to do, but we had to have that for sustainability."

Holland said Lubbock's loyalty has made it possible for it to weather the financial storm.

"Our patrons have been so good to hold their tickets, we've done a few refunds here and there if they couldn't make the rescheduled date," Holland said. "But most folks said we want to keep our tickets and come back when we know the new date."

Under Governor Abbott's orders, the theater can host about 200 people.

"Every other row is available and then we taped off between every two seats, so we're staying compliant on the distancing and that type of thing," Holland explained. "We're taking temperature checks at the door and all of our staff will be in masks so we're doing everything we can to be as safe as we can."

On top of becoming COVID-19 compliant, Holland has spent time sprucing up the curb appeal.

"We've done a lot of planting out front," Holland said. "We got custom cedar boxes and planted it with native material and some cactus to further accentuate the cactus name."

Holland has theater in his family history and a passion for all genres of music. He took over the Cactus Theater in 2016 and feels like he was born to do this, calling it a labor of love.

"The lure and the legacy of this theater is really important to Lubbock, it's the only historic theater left in town and keeping it not just alive, but thriving going forward is the goal," Holland said. "We just have great fans, community support and sponsors that make it happen."

The Sounds of West Texas show will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday, featuring local talent. And FOX34's very own Kurt Kiser will be the emcee.
