LUBBOCK, Texas -

Texas Tech named its new president of the Health Sciences Center Friday.

Lori Rice-Spearman first came to Texas Tech a student.

She attended one of the first classes ever held in the HSC, now she has been appointed the first female president in the university's history.

She says accepting the position is a great honor. As a West-Texan, Spearman says she grew up knowing the values, ethics and mission of Texas Tech University.

"Texas Tech University Health Science Center is a national academic leader in health care. We are poised to make and even greater impact in Texas and around the world. It is my distinct honor to have the opportunity to serve as the ninth president of this great University," she said.

Spearman has served as interim president since November, when Chancellor Tedd Mitchell stepped down from that spot to focus on his other duties.

She joined TTUHSC in 1987 as an instructor in what was then the School of Allied Health Sciences.
