Severe storms produce wind damage, power outages around Lubbock

LUBBOCK -

Severe storms produced destructive wind Thursday night across Lubbock and some South Plains communities. As of this writing, it's tough to know what kind of damage around the city, since the storms were exiting late at night. We will get a better idea once the sun is up.

We do know there were some utility poles downed. At the storm's peak the LP&L outage map showed more than 16,000 customers in the dark. That number has been steadily dropping as crews work late through the night.

A gust of 77mph was clocked at the Lubbock Airport. Here are some peak gusts from the Texas Tech Mesonet:

Graham 94mph at 10:40 p.m.
Post 73mph at 10:20 p.m.
Silverton 72mph at 5:10 p.m.
Lubbock near Texas Tech 72mph at 9:30 p.m.
West Lubbock at Reese Center 69mph at 9:27 p.m.
Ralls 62mph at 7:35 p.m.
Slaton 60mph at 9:40 p.m.
