Courthouse begins to reopen, citizens encouraged to schedule virtual appointments

LUBBOCK, Texas -

With the court systems opening back up since the outbreak of COVID-19 and the City of Lubbock is catching up on eviction notices.

The courthouse has taken cases like eviction, but is urging citizens to schedule these appointments virtually and not show up in-person.

The department is trying to adhere to the CDC guidelines and implement social distancing, but does not have the physical space to safely accommodate a large group of people to wait for their hearings.

Justice of the Peace Susan Rowley says there are other ways to face the court.

"We're doing it remotely by internet via Zoom. You can do that on your smart phone or on your computer. If you don't happen to have a smart phone then we can do it over the phone lines too. So we can do it on speaker phone, but we're not having you come in," she said.

The city is also sending out fliers to help people schedule remotely.
