State surge response team doubles testing in Amarillo area amid outbreak

Posted: Updated:
AMARILLO, Texas -

Governor Abbott says the COVID-19 outbreak in Amarillo serves as an example of how the state's Surge Response Team operates.

During a visit to the panhandle, the governor said Amarillo faced all three types of outbreaks the state identified early on; nursing homes, meat packing plants and jails.

Between May 13 and Monday, the governor says surge response teams doubled the amount of testing in the Amarillo area.

On Saturday, May 16, the team identified more than 600 new cases there alone. From there the daily positives fell to zero on Monday.

Governor Abbott says Amarillo has turned the corner and is helping the rest of the state open up the economy.

The governor anticipates there will be another spike in positive cases later this week as more testing is done at the JBS Plant north of Amarillo. He says, after that, he anticipates the area's positivity rate to flatten.
