Lubbock Chamber: Unemployment at estimated 12%

Posted: Updated:

April was the highest unemployment rate Texas has ever seen at 12.8%, 3% higher than the previous record.

Norma Ritz Johnson, with the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce, said full service restaurant employees made the most claims followed by the energy sector. Before the pandemic, Lubbock's unemployment rate was at 3%. In April, it was an estimated 12%, right near the state's average. Johnson says the chamber is working hard to fix that.

"We're trying to connect workers at all levels who have been displaced with all types of opportunities whether it's job re-training or up scaling,"Johnson said.

"There needs to be consumer confidence while making folks comfortable that they can go out and enjoy our amazing community," Johnson said.

The safety component is a two-way street and the chamber is working on liability reform.

"We need to have some business liability issues taken care of. Hopefully it will be in the federal legislation. That's very important for businesses to have more confidence in their ability to reopen," Johnson said.
