Gyms re-open as restrictions ease

LUBBOCK, Texas -

It was back to business for gyms across the state Monday.

Many workout enthusiasts, eager to get that first endorphins rush, hurried back to old habits.

"It was like a breath of fresh air to be honest. You know, everyone was in here, acting like, that nothing ever was so to speak," Brandan Fokken, Wellness Director at Zach's Club, said.

"Opening day has been crazy, but it has been pretty smooth. We had a line out the door at 5 a.m. this morning for people waiting to get inside, just excited to be able to, have a place to be able to work out again," Adrian Abraham, Fitness Manager at TruFit at 4th and Slide said.

Things are not like they used to be, of course.

Spaced out machines, extra cleanings, extra precautions. Wearing gloves is encouraged, sometimes even required, like for TruFit members.

But for dedicated gym-goers it is a small price to pay.

"I'm a Type I diabetic, you can tell vast improvement," Jimmy Wright, a member at Zach's Club said. "That means less medication for me, ultimately, getting to do the workouts and using the equipment that I get to use here."

Zach's Club was in hot water a few weeks ago for attempting to re-open ahead of schedule.

On Monday, its re-opening felt like a celebration.

"It's a gift to the community that you can have a facility where you can get healthy at.  Let's say we're closed through July or August, the business wouldn't be here. Plain and simple. The people that rely on this business, some of them may not be here," Fokken said.

Other businesses and food trucks were also invited to welcome guests back.

Although some may be nervous to return, at least 10 newcomers signed up at TruFit on opening day.
