Dentist office continues to practice safely amid pandemic

Posted: Updated:

Dentistry involves very close contact with others. Hill & Ioppolo Oral & Dental Implant Surgery of Lubbock is still practicing safely amid the pandemic.

Those in dentistry are used to treating patients with diseases that are communicable, so many were prepared when COVID-19 hit.

"The N95 mask that has become so popular and something that we use in our practice now on every patient when we're doing surgery, that mask was invented to treat patients with active tuberculosis," Dr. Robert Ioppolo said.

Protocols were changing almost every day for the practice of dentistry. To be prepared and implement all the necessary changes, the office of Hill & Ioppolo closed for a period of time. Now it is back open.

"We're all kind of joking right now it feels like perpetual summer because everyone's home," Dr. Ioppolo said.

Before arriving to the office, patients go over a COVID questionnaire over the phone. Upon arrive, hands are sanitized and temperatures are taken. When a patient enters the front door, the goal is for them to interact with and touch as little as possible.

"We have all the doors propped open, everything is sanitized at the beginning of the day and after each patient comes through," Dr. Ioppolo said.

An unanticipated positive, Ioppolo said this new process has improved the efficiency.

"The patient doesn't have any waiting time in the waiting room, they go directly from their car into an exam room and I'm usually right there immediately there after," Dr. Ioppolo said.

Even when the pandemic is over, some of the new sanitizing measures, like the air purification units, will stay in place.

"It feels like a whole lot more like when I operate at the hospital, like that level of sterility and cleanliness,' Dr. Ioppolo said.

Ioppolo said with all of the safety measures in place, no one should be nervous about getting dental work done during this time.
