LUBBOCK, Texas -

Governor Abbott and the Division of Emergency Management announced a new partnership Friday.

Local fire departments will help city health officials provide virus testing in nursing homes throughout Texas.

The governor says the partnership will help provide extra protection for the state's most vulnerable population.

"I thank our local fire departments for continuing to serve their fellow Texans throughout the COVID-19 response. By serving their communities in this new capacity, we will continue to contain the spread of this virus and protect the health and safety of all Texans," Gov. Abbott said.

In Lubbock, 233 confirmed cases have been tied to nursing homes. All Lubbock deaths attributed to the virus are individuals over the age of 50.
