LPD delivers for Lubbock Meals on Wheels

LUBBOCK, Texas -

For the third year in a row, the Lubbock Police Department teamed up with the Lubbock Meals on Wheels staff to deliver hot lunches to homebound people.

Assistant Director of Lubbock Meals on Wheels, Mary Gerlach said this is just scratching the surface of all the things the LPD does to help out the community.

"I've had the opportunity to work with the police in different capacities over the years and they do so many good things," Gerlach said. "And they do so much stuff that people have absolutely no idea about."

The LPD rounded up its team and set out on 64 different routes to deliver meals within the city limits. Assistant Chief, Neal Barron has been a part of the LPD for 24 years and said this is a day he looks forward to all year.

"We're busy taking calls everyday or investigating cases, so this is a nice break to be able to get out and do something for our citizens," Barron said.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the LPD took necessary safety precautions while they delivered. Barron said not being able to shake hands, hug or even share his smile that was covered by a mask, was different. However, it was still important to the him and his staff to keep this tradition going.

"Often you might be the only person that the homebound person sees all day," Barron said. "So it's a good thing to go out and make some conversation and get to know the people that we work for."

Since 1962, this week in May has been dedicated to showing appreciation to law enforcement for the sacrifices they have made, and continue to make to keep our nation safe.

National Police Week continues through May 16th and although public events associated with NPW are canceled, showing appreciation to your local law enforcement is not.
