Businesses starting to recover after economic slowdown

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Businesses are reopening under new regulations, and some are already recovering from the economic slowdown.

Since reopening on May 1, business has really picked up at HobbyTown, located on 5610 Frankford Ave. Suite E.

Manager Emilly Foxworth said more families are visiting the toy and hobby shop to find new things they can do while at home.

"It's been very busy," Foxworth said. "With all the kids at home, people are coming in and getting the science stuff, tune up their radio control cars, it's been great."

While it was closed, she said business was down 90 percent with only curbside pickup, but it has since picked back up.

"This is the perfect opportunity to teach your kids the stuff the schools aren't able to teach students, studio craft and what not, hands on soldering, life skills," she said.

With dining rooms now open at 25 percent capacity, restaurants are also seeing better business

"People really were ready to go out and do something fun," Loyd Turner, president of Orlando's and Caprock Cafe, said. "So, we were ready to see them, because it's our house and part of that experience is they come in and we take care of them."

Orlando's was already set up for delivery and takeout, but Turner said Caprock Cafe did not do deliveries prior to the closure. It had to shift to a takeout/delivery only model, teaming up with Favor.

Turner said it was not profitable, but both restaurants managed to survive. The restaurants are following the health protocols set forth by Gov. Greg Abbott. He also encourages everyone to continue taking precautions when they go out.

"I think we're through the worst of it now," he said. "As far as 25 percent, starting to see some daylight. 50 percent, I think we can get to where we can survive long term."
