LUBBOCK, Texas -

The Lubbock grand jury has indicted a murder defendant for a related burglary.

Casey Owens is out of jail on more than $500,000 bond. He's charged with murdering an ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend, 38-year-old Landon Terry, back in 2017 in southwest Lubbock.

Investigators claim he broke into her home near 88th and Hyden and hid inside. When the woman and Terry found him, police say Owens pistol-whipped his ex and shot Terry at least three times.

Court records show he escaped then turned himself in the next morning.

Owens was in jail until this past week awaiting trial for the Terry's murder. His family gathered up enough money to pay off his bond for that charge, so Lubbock County's District Attorney stacked the burglary charge.

Owen's attorney asked for a reduction on his bond since the family couldn't afford a new one. He also cited concerns, to which DA Sunshine Stanek noted Owens doesn't routinely follow masking requirements at the detention center.

Judge William Eighman granted the reduction.

Owens is on house arrest in Shallowater with an ankle monitor.

If convicted for Terry's murder, he faces up to life in prison with the possibility for parole.
