Boys & Girls club takes a big hit after ABC Pro Rodeo cancellation

LUBBOCK, Texas -

"We tried our hardest to make this work, but we just couldn't," ABC Pro Rodeo chairman Leslie Cox said.

It's a highly-anticipated event, but a no-go in 2020.

Cox says it wouldn't be worth it to put on the week-long event this year.

"If we would have continued with the normal rodeo, excluding all of the other outside events, we still would have been operating at a loss, because of the capacity limitation," she explained.

The rodeo, is not just about the event itself.

"That rodeo was actually started originally as a fundraiser for The Boys Club. And that is how a lot of our facilities and things of that nature have been funded over the years," Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Club of Lubbock Tom Vermillion said.

The plan is to host smaller events in the Fall, like a BBQ cook-off  or barrel race, to make up some of the difference.

"The smaller events that we have planned, won't be able to generate the kind of revenue that we would in a rodeo, but it's what we can try to do to do something," Cox said.

"They have given us, in excess, a million and a half dollars, over the past 77 years. It's hard to find supporters that will be with you for that long," Vermillion said.

He says it is too early to know the real impact just yet.

On Wednesday, the clubs in North and West Lubbock will re-open for essential personnel.

"It's going to be different. Dramatically different I would say."

Their summer programming is expected to begin on June 1st.
