Small businesses stay connected with customers during pandemic

Posted: Updated:

Some small businesses are changing operations.

Pecan Ridge has been shelling since 1995 and the gift store features all local products. When COVID-19 hit, it transitioned from being everywhere and all over Lubbock all the time, to being online focused.

"We celebrate Lubbock entrepreneurs and share their stories and just because we can't go around to every individual business doesn't mean we can't do that on facebook on instagram and elsewhere," Pecan Ridge Dylan Moore said.

Moore said what he's learned through this experience is brick and mortar isn't dead, but the customer's wants have changed.

"I think the brick and mortar customers want more of a shop local experience," Moore said.

Play Street Museum is an indoor play place with birthday parties on the weekends.

"They come here to have fun, learn through play," Play Street Museum Lubbock Erica Diamond said.

What was 9:00 to 5:00 play time before COVID-19 came to a stop, so a focus on the retail area grew with different kinds of kits to bring the Play Street experience home.

"Parents are looking for an experience with their child, something to do with them," Diamond said.

Diamond said this experience has helped her feel more connected with her customers.

"Looking at it as we're all in this together, we're a community and the interaction and what we're sharing through this all," Diamond said.

In a search to find a better cup of coffee, Tierras Planas Roasters came about. Retail nearly stopped during the pandemic, but it started delivering to porches.

"We're shifting more from a come pick it up at the farmers market on Saturday to how can I service you as my customer," Tierras Planas Roasters Kerry Mayfield said.

Mayfield said maintaining a relationship with customers is the key right now.

All three businesses said social media has helped with their success during this challenging time and encourage you to follow along.
