Mini horses bring smiles to nursing home residents

LUBBOCK, Texas -

It's no secret the virus, has hit nursing homes hard.

Unable to see loved ones, the most vulnerable are feeling, even more lonely.

"It's the hardest thing as a caregiver, as a worker inside the facility, to see the residents not being with their family members.that's probably the toughest thing," Janet Hunton, an administrator at The Plaza, said.

So a visit from "Minis and Friends South Plains"  was welcomed on Thursday at the long term healthcare facility, with some precautions.

"We were trying to figure out how we could do it, and thought 'why can't we just go through windows?'" co-founder of the non-profit Melanie Tatum said.

It is  new for Buttercup, Cracker Jack and Snuggles, to get kisses and pets from a safe distance but the big smiles they give are the just same.

"You can't help but smile when you see a miniature horse, you can't touch them, at least you can enjoy seeing them. And hopefully it can bring some happiness to them. Not just the residents, but the workers as well. This has been hard on everybody," Tatum said.

"The employees were smiling, I was smiling. I mean it just brightens up everybody," Hunton said.

The horses, weren't the only visitors.

"Coming every week, we see a lot of these residents more than friends or family, so, they kind of are like friends and family," Stephanie Richards said.

Stephanie and Bill Richards of Trinity church have been coming here for the past 8 years.

"I just always like to praise the lord, and it always makes me feel alive to do this," Bill Richards said. "Some of them, sing along with us. We've even had some that don't normally join us, join us. You know, because, at least it's a visit. We get truly blessed as much as we try to bless."

"Minis and Friends" plan on spreading the love to nursing homes, as safely as possible.
