Chapel provides closure for mourners amid pandemic

Posted: Updated:

As many funerals, viewing and visitations were fairly large before COVID-19. Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers has made some changes to still accommodate a lot of people and provide the closure mourners deserve.

Believing in the power of the human touch, the Lake Ridge Chapel staff has struggled with distancing amid the pandemic.

"Not being able to hug on and love on our families, that has been extremely difficult, so we've been rubbing a lot of elbows," Lake Ridge Chapel & Memorial Designers Embalmer Laura Landes said.

With a limit of 10 ten people for each funeral, smaller, intimate ceremonies in house have helped bring families closer together.

"We see families visiting with each other more, more stories that they're sharing, they're laughing, even though it's a smaller event, we think it's getting back to the way things used to be when families came first," Lake Ridge Chapel & Memorial Designers Owner Santos Moreno said.

Lake Ridge Chapel made some adjustments to reach family members all around the world. Chapel, graveside, and viewing services are now all available virtually. It has had live stream services for more than ten years.

"Whenever we had to go to streaming service we were already ready for it with the proper equipment, the HD cameras," Moreno said.

Although it may be different, Moreno encourages families to have services now and not wait.

"There's going to be more problems down the road. Psychological problems, timing problems, and our fear is what if they don't ever do anything for that person and everybody deserves some sort of service," Moreno said.

Landes said while you're at Lake Ridge Chapel, you shouldn't worry about the cleanliness.

"The droplets that come out of here, they're antibacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal also," Landes said.

Staffers are still providing after-care and grief programs in zoom meetings.
