Texas economy to begin opening in phases
AUSTIN, Texas -
Governor Greg Abbott announced his plans for reopening Texas businesses during a briefing Monday afternoon.
The governor issued an Executive Order allowing retail, restaurants, movie theaters and malls to reopen on Friday, May 1. However, businesses that are allowed to reopen can only operate with no more than 25% occupancy.
The stay-at-home order issued last month is set to expire on Thursday, April 30.
Other essential businesses, like barbershops, nail salons, gyms and bars may have the go ahead to reopen in mid-May following phase one if successful. Gov. Abbott plans to go ahead with phase two around May 18 if there are no flare ups of new COVID-19 cases.
Gov. Abbott said Monday the state of Texas has the third most recoveries from the cornavirus in the U.S.
The governor's plan outlines safe steps in gradually reopening the state, but reminds Texans to be mindful and continue social distancing.
